MEAT SAFETY ACT (ACT 40 OF 2000)

The abattoir industry is responsible for the conversion of livestock to meat. This process remains critical to ensure a safe and wholesome product to consumers. The Meat Safety Act, 2000 (Act 40 of 2000) addresses measures to promote the safety of meat and animal products and to establish and maintain essential national standards in respect of abattoirs.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT STANDARDS ACT (ACT 119 OF 1990)

The act control and promotes specific product standards (e.g. meat, dairy products etc.) from mainly a quality point of view for local as well as export purposes. A list of products for which standards have been set through Regulations is promulgated under the Act by the Minister responsible for agriculture.

The feedlot and abattoir industries have however, objected against the restriction on movement of animals and animal products after normal working hours, due to the negative impact on their industries.
